How do I ask for money from a consumer?

I have just started and have my first order. I supply both business and consumers with different products but I am unclear how to ensure the customer will pay.

There is a high (60%) part of the invoice total that is capital goods and I want to be sure to get paid. Can I ask for payment in advance for the capital part of the project?
